In Memory of Alexander E. Bondarev

On January 14, 2026, our friend and colleague, Alexander E. Bondarev (06/23/1962 – 01/14/2026), a member of the editorial board, the editor of the journal, PhD of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, died.

Alexander E. Bondarev graduated from the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of Lomonosov Moscow State University with a degree in Mechanics in 1984 and in the same year joined the Keldysh Institute of Applied Mathematics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, where he worked all his life. In his early years, he participated in the creation of software systems and performed calculations of the flow problems of aircraft of complex shape, was engaged in the development of numerical methods for solving non-stationary viscous problems of heat and mass transfer. He built software systems for calculating and visualizing laminar and turbulent flows in aircraft tracks, numerical modeling and visualization of heat and mass transfer and sound propagation processes in complex volumes, and others. In 1990, Alexander E. Bondarev defended his PhD thesis on modeling unsteady viscous flows with circulation zones.

In recent years, Alexander E. Bondarev' research interests at the Keldysh Institute of Physics and Technology of the Russian Academy of Sciences have been focused on creating new methods and technologies for processing and analyzing multidimensional amounts of data, developing a strategy for generalized computational experiment based on the synthesis of methods, approaches and algorithms from various disciplines: mathematical modeling, parallel computing and visual analysis of multidimensional data.

Alexander E. Bondarev was at the origin of the organization of international annual conferences on computer graphics and GRAPHICON visualization in 1991. Since 2012, for 13 years, he has been conducting his own separate section "Scientific Visualization and Visual Analytics" at the conference, which attracted a large number of interested specialists from all over the country.

For many years, Alexander E. Bondarev was a member of the editorial board and the managing editor of the Scientific Visualization journal. His contribution to the development of the journal cannot be overestimated.

He was attentive to every incoming article, supervised the review process, and made plans for issues and special issues. Alexander E. Bondarev often acted as the author of scientific publications himself, setting the high professional level of the publication. Largely due to his work, the journal has taken its rightful place among reputable scientific publications and has strengthened its position in national and international scientometric databases.

When presenting the journal, Alexander E. Bondarev actively collaborated with the organizing committees of Russian and international conferences, was a member of many of them, attracting leading experts to publication and expanding the professional community around the journal.

Alexander E. Bondarev was also actively engaged in teaching – he taught a course on "Scientific Visualization" and supervised graduate students at MIREA.

Alexander E. Bondarev made an invaluable contribution to science, having established himself as a brilliant mathematician, programmer, researcher and organizer. His work as a journal editor has become an example of a responsible approach to the development of the professional community. We will keep a bright memory of this talented scientist and an exceptionally decent, friendly person who never let us down and was always ready to help.
